My favourite café stops - Part One - Pollenca and surrounds

Below are my personal favourites for café stops whilst cycling in the north of Mallorca in no apparent order. There is however so much choice, and by staying away from the made for purpose tourist restaurants on the beachfronts, you cannot really go wrong, wherever you choose to stop.

I will add other areas as I get the time over the next couple of weeks. I hope you find my comments and choices useful and I would appreciate hearing about yours.

Formentor Beach Café

good coffee and an ok selection of pastries and cake. Prices are slightly higher than the norm, but here, its all about the view. Sit on the terrace under the trees enjoying the view over the beach all the way round the bay of Pollenca. To find it, you need to go towards the Formentor hotel initially, and then down to the right towards the gift shop and beach. It makes a brilliant first stop on the Bay of Pollenca route or your main stop on a simple Cap Formentor route. The alternative would be to stop at the lighthouse café but that for me is nowhere near as good.

Bon Apetit café

next to Niu Wave cycles at the main roundabout as you enter Alcudia from Port Pollenca - good coffee plus they stock a great range of cake and pastries. Has only a small roadside terrace with no view to speak of, but the food is good. Very good. Worth noting that they always have a nice range of fresh takeaway sandwiches wrapped and ready to go. Worthwhile picking some up if you are going to put your feet up at the picnic tables near S'illot beach. Found on the Bay of Pollenca and La Victoria routes.

Bodega de Sol

a stop more for lunch than for coffee and cake, the excellent paella and Mallorcan specialities are served to you under a cool shady terrace with a light breeze to cool that sweaty brow. Found on the Bay of Pollenca and La Victoria routes.

Cocodrilo Restaurant

sitting on the Bonaire marina. They do good coffee, but the main attraction is their fresh seafood and maybe the best G & T in the area, all to be enjoyed on an amazing sunny terrace with views across the boats to the Serra de Tramuntana. A great place to watch the sun set. You may need a taxi home as it is difficult to leave once settled. Also offering a good value menu del dia on weekdays out out the summer season. Found on the Bay of Pollenca and La Victoria routes.

Bar S'illot

cliffside restaurant with a good choice of quality food. Even if the food was rubbish, its worth stopping for the view alone. Another great place to watch the sun set behind the Serra de Tramuntana. Found on the Bay of Pollenca and La Victoria routes.

Picnic tables
near S'illot beach

that overlook the beach where bikinis seem to be optional. Eat the snack you bought with you or just take a well earned rest and enjoy the scenery. Found on the Bay of Pollenca and La Victoria routes.

Sa Tafona

is that well known combination of restaurant and olive oil farm. Situated at the bottom of the Coll de Sa Batalla climb. Providing a very good range of food. The authentic pa amb oli's are very popular. But, the cakes for me are the highlight. Spiced apple, chocolate, carrot or the best almond cake on the island. All topped off with a good coffee, or two.

Tolo's Restaurant

the home from home for many cyclists. Tolo's is an institution. Well worth a visit. Situated on the Port Pollenca beach front. The quality of food and drinks is excellent. At the busiest times you may have a wait for your meal, but it will be worth it. Cycling memorabilia adorns the walls.

Coll de Sa Batalla Café

another famous cyclists café. Providing excellent cakes and having a long history of serving cyclists. Right next door to the only garage in the area if you just want to grab something to go. Found on the Alcudia Almond route and the Coll de Sa Batalla climb, and also on routes from Pollenca through Lluc to Sa Calobra.

Bar Mallorca

In Cala Sant Vincente, overlooking Cala Molins. Good range of snacks as well as cakes. More ice creams seem to be purchased here than most other cycle stops. May be to do with almost having beach sand in your cleats. Tough to get away without having a nice cold beer.. beautiful views across the bay and the cala. Add this stop onto any route that takes you between the old town of Pollenca and the Port of Pollenca. It is an additional very worthwhile 8km.
